New Delhi: Student activist Sharjeel Imam, who is currently lodged in Tihar Jail, has approached a Delhi court seeking interim bail to contest next month’s Bihar Assembly elections, from Bahadurganj constituency.
Former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) scholar Sharjeel, accused in the 2020 Delhi riots case, has approached a Delhi court seeking interim bail to contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, according to a report by Bar and Bench.
Sharjeel has filed the bail petition before the Karkardooma Court’s additional sessions judge Sameer Bajpai, who has been hearing the Delhi riots conspiracy case, Bar and Bench reported.
He has sought interim bail of two weeks, from October 15 to 29.
Sharjeel, who was booked under multiple cases including those related to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) protests, got bail in all but the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots conspiracy case. It’s been tough getting bail as Delhi Police invoked the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) against Sharjeel.
Delhi High Court rejected his last regular bail petition on September 2. He then approached the Supreme Court, where his appeal in pending.
In his interim bail petition, Sharjeel has argued that he is a political prisoner and a student activist.
“He (Sharjeel Imam) is willing to contest elections from his home state Bihar which is scheduled to take place in 2 phases from 10.10.2025 to 16.11.2025,” Bar and Bench quoted from his petition, which further stated that he is seeking to contest from Bahadurganj seat, in Kishanganj district, as an independent candidate.
Bahadurganj constituency is currently represented by Mohammad Anzar Nayeemi, who was elected in 2020 on an AIMIM ticket, but subsequently switched to Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
