Bhubaneswar: The mercury soared to 44.8°C in Jharsuguda by 12.30 pm on Monday with heatwave conditions returning to Odisha.
Similarly, Sambalpur recorded 42.6°C, Hirakud 41.8°C, and Rourkela 41.2°C. The mercury levels in Bhubaneswar touched 35.2°C.
The day temperature is expected to rise by 3-5°C during the next 3 days. “Maximum temperature is likely to be above 42°C in Angul, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Balangir, Sonepur, Boudh, Bargarh, Kalahandi, and Nuapada,” the IMD said in its midday bulletin.
The mercury may soar to 40°C in twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack after 3-4 days.

The weather agency has issued a heatwave warning from April 22. Heatwave along with hot and humid conditions may prevail in some parts of the state from April 23-25.
On April 21, thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph may occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in Koraput and Malkangiri districts. Thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh,Rayagada, Nabarangpur and Kalahandi. Light rain may also occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur and Kalahandi districts.
HEATWAVE WARNING FROM APRIL 22
Light to moderate rain may continue in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts on April 26-27 with little change in the weather conditions during the subsequent 3 days.
