Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday expressed concern over the derailment of the Kamakhya Express near Nergundi railway station in Odisha’s Cuttack district.

“Deeply concerned about the derailment of Kamakhya Express near Nergundi station in #Cuttack. Grateful that all passengers are safe. Authorities are on-site, ensuring assistance and restoring normalcy at the earliest. Helplines activated for support,” the CM wrote on his X handle.

Meanwhile, a special train, carrying the stranded passengers, has left for Kamakhya via Cuttack. “Down line trains are running in diverted route via Barang-Nergundi-Kapilas Road instead of Barang-Cuttack-Nergundi,” the ECoR informed in its latest update.

The trains are as follows:

• 12822 Puri-Howrah Dhauli Express
• 12875 Puri-Anand Vihar Neelachal Express
• 22606 Tirunelveli-Purulia Express
• 12704 Secunderabad-Howrah Falaknuma Express
• 12513 Secunderabad-Silchar Express

The mishap, in which 11 coaches of 12551 Bangalore-Kamakhya AC Superfast Express derailed, took place at around 11.54 am. No injuries or casualties have been reported, it asserted

“Upon receiving the information, General Manager (GM), East Coast Railway and Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Khurda Road along with other senior railway officials rushed to the site to oversee the situation and coordinate relief operations. Accident Relief and Medical Relief Trains were immediately dispatched to the location to ensure passenger safety and facilitate restoration work. A special train was arranged to transport the stranded passengers to their respective destinations. stranded passengers were also provided with drinking water, snacks and food packets,” the release said.

IGP Central Range Praveen Kumar, Cuttack (Rural) SP Prateek Singh and Cuttack Choudwar MLA Souvik Biswal also visited the accident site.

Reports, however, indicate that one passenger has died in the mishap. Injured passengers have been shifted to SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack for treatment.

“We have received one body apart from some injured passengers. Three teams of doctors have been engaged to treat the injured passengers,” Administrative officer of SCB Medical College and Hospital Subash Chandra Ray told reporters.

Meanwhile, Barabati-Cuttack MLA Sofia Firdous visited the hospital to meet the injured passengers. “Spoke with patients & their families, interacted with the Superintendent, doctors & staff regarding treatment, and discussed swift traveler support with the Divisional Railway Manager,” she posted on X.

She also mentioned about loss of one life in the mishap. “My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family,” she wrote.
