Mumbai: Reflecting on Karisma Kapoor’s broken engagement with Abhishek Bachchan and her ‘abrupt’ marriage to businessman Sunjay Kapur, filmmaker Suneel Darshan described the actress’ life as ‘turbulent but dignified’.
The producer-director, who has worked with both Karisma and Abhishek in the 2002 film ‘Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya’, praised the Kapoor sisters and their mother Babita for dealing with personal and professional challenges in a dignified way.
In a conversation with journalist Vickey Lalwani, Suneel shared, “Destiny has played a lot of turbulence in the life of the Kapoor girls. They are fortunate to have the mother they do, who has always tried to protect them, even if it meant making mistakes in the process. Babita ji is not God. She’s a human being and can make errors.”
He added, “These girls were brought up with a lot of care and love. They were supported in their careers,” he added, choosing not to go deeper into family matters.
While talking about the chemistry between Karisma and Abhishek, the filmmaker said, “Chemistry was there, you have to watch Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya. Their chemistry in the film reflected their real-life bond.”
Revealing that the couple broke up due to external pressures, he said, “Sometimes the issues from outside their inner space created the problems and disturbed the whole thing. I thought everything was good until that point. I still feel both Karisma and Kareena, I will stand by them anytime.”
In October 2002, Jaya Bachchan announced Karisma and Abhishek’s engagement on the occasion of Amitabh Bachchan’s 60th birthday. However, the engagement was called off by January 2003.
While Karisma married Sunjay in 2003, Abhishek tied the knot with Aishwarya Rai in 2007.
