Labourer Electrocuted At Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium In Odisha’s Rourkela

Rourkela: Three days ahead of the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 in Odisha’s Rourkela, a contractual labourer was electrocuted at Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium here on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Gopal Tirkey of Bhagatola village under Tainsar panchayat of Lathikata block here.

According to sources, he fell down after accidentally coming in contact with a live wire while working at one of the gates of the stadium and was rushed to Rourkela government hospital, where doctors declared him dead. He was engaged by a firm ‘Dipshika Enterprises’.

Notably, 20 of the 44 World Cup matches will be held at this stadium. Host India will play its first match against Spain here on January 13.

On January 6, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the hockey stadium, which has been built at an estimated cost of Rs 261 crore. It has been built in a record 15 months’ time with a seating capacity of 20,000.
