Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday said that heavy rainfall under the influence of a low pressure over the Bay of Bengal is most likely to trigger a calamitous situation in some districts of Odisha.

The national weather agency, in a mid-day bulletin, said that heavy rainfall will cause waterlogging in low-lying areas and damage to kutcha houses and informal roads. There is the possibility of landslide in hilly areas as well.

Waterlogging on underpass roads and low-lying urban areas is also expected, along with traffic congestion.

IMD said that the cyclonic circulation over west-central Bay of Bengal, off the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts, now lies over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and neighbourhood, while the north-south trough from Bihar to south interior Odisha across Jharkhand has turned into a cyclonic circulation. Under its influence, a low-pressure area will develop over the north-east Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood on Sunday and it will be more marked over the north-west Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood during the subsequent 24 hours. This will trigger heavy rainfall in most parts of south coastal, south, north and north interior districts which will continue for four days till September 22.

IMD has issued yellow and orange warning for the following districts:

September 19
(Yellow warning)
Heavy rainfall at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi and Kandhamal.
