Malkangiri Limps Back To Life As Flood Situation Improves

Malkangiri: Intensity of rainfall came down and the flood-like situation in Malkangiri improved on Saturday, bringing much relief to the people of the district.

According to sources, water level of rivers, including Sileru, Saberi, Poteru and Saptadhara, have started receding. Road communication has also been restored in the district.

Notably, the district received an average of 72.67 mm rainfall on Friday with highest of 128 mm being recorded in Korukonda block.

Roads were under four to five ft of water on Friday, disrupting communication on Malkangiri-Kalimela-Motu and Malkangiri-Mathili-Govindpalli-Jeypore routes. Low-lying bridges in MV-7, Potteru and Kangrukonda were submerged and Malkangiri-Kalimela-Podia route cut off on the day.

As the amount of rainfall decreased, the water level started receding, Malkangiri Collector Manish Agarwal said, adding that the district administration was prepared to handle the situation.

The administration had opened 14 centres for providing free food. A total of 630 people have been rescued and brought to relief centres, he added.
