Bhubaneswar: In a ongoing investigation into fraud under the pretext of a false promise of marriage, the Mancheswar Police in Bhubaneswar on Monday affixed a notice at the residence of the accused, Abinash Mahapatra, in the Rasulgarh area.
According to sources, the police action followed four months of non-cooperation from Mahapatra and his family, who repeatedly evaded investigating officers visiting their home.
In a complaint lodged in February, the woman said that the duo had met while she was residing in a local hostel and subsequently entered into an intimate relationship after he allegedly promised to marry her. Both families had also also discussed marriage during which a ring ceremony was conducted. However, after her family fixed a wedding date, Mahapatra and his relatives, allegedly backed out of the proposal without offering a valid reason.
Following the initial complaint, Mancheswar police registered an FIR against Mahapatra for allegedly establishing a physical relationship on a false promise of marriage and later reneging on the commitment. Although Mahapatra subsequently secured a bail, the court directed him to cooperate in the probe. He and his family, however, remained unresponsive and evaded police visits for nearly four months.
With repeated attempts to trace them failing, officers attached the legal notice to the front door of Mahapatra’s house, ordering him to appear at the Mancheswar police station on August 20 to join the ongoing investigation.
No official statements have been issued by the police, the complainant, or the accused’s family regarding the latest development.
