Mohanty said checking was conducted at 36 places in Bhubaneswar and more than Rs 8 lakh in fines were collected on the first day.

Besides, many violators who managed to flee during the checking were identified through the automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) machine. Police have sent challan with the fine amount to the addresses of these violators.

Mohanty further said that a traffic violation detection system (TVDS) will be installed at Rupali Square on Monday to keep an eye on the drivers violating traffic signal and zebra crossings.

In Cuttack, fines were collected from 63 persons during the checking at Jobra Anicut Square, Badambadi Square and Madhupatna Square.

Apart from the twin cities, fines were also collected from the 65 persons in Balasore, 19 in Bhadrak and 60 in Keonjhar district.

The DGP said that the checking will continue at regular intervals across the state.
