Bhubaneswar: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an Action Taken Report (ATR) from the Mayurbhanj District Magistrate on allegations of illegal stone quarrying in the foothills of Simlipal National Park,
In an order dated September 28, the NHRC directed the DM to inquire into the allegations and submit a report within two weeks of receiving the Commission’s communication.
The complaint, filed by rights activist and advocate Akhand, alleged that unauthorised stone quarrying was being carried out in the area, particularly at night, using drilling machines and explosives.
It claimed that blasting caused loud explosions and tremors in nearby villages, including Saratchandrapur and Bankasahi, and that cracks had developed in some houses, particularly mud houses inhabited by poor and vulnerable families.
The complainant also alleged that quarrying was being undertaken without requisite approvals or environmental clearances.
He further alleged that over 50 stone-laden trucks were passing through the area daily, affecting road safety and the life of residents.
Concerns were also raised over alleged deforestation, hill cutting, and noise and air pollution in the Similipal region. The complainant contended that such activities could adversely affect the safety, livelihood and dignity of local communities dependent on natural resources.
The NHRC observed that “if true”, the allegations would constitute serious violations of human rights. It accordingly directed its registry to forward the complaint to the DM for an inquiry and an expeditious report.
The complainant has sought action against those involved in the quarrying, including confiscation of machinery and trucks, besides relief and compensation for families whose houses were allegedly damaged or whose lives were put at risk.
