Bhubaneswar: The children, who are overweight or suffer from hypertension or display metabolic syndrome, need to be screened for Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), said eminent pediatrician Prof Niranjan Mohanty.

Speaking at a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on the prevalence, burden and management of fatty liver disease in children organised at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital here, Prof Mohanty said NAFLD has become a high risk public concern today.

Prof Nimai Charan Mohanty, renowned pediatrician from MGM Institute of Health Sciences, Mumbai, spoke about the variegated manifestation of hepatitis in children and how to reduce the infectivity in the community.

Dr Vyvav Venkatesh, pediatric gastroenterologist at IMS and SUM Hospital, highlighted the manifestation of pancreatic diseases in children.

Around 75 participants including members of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP), senior faculty members of the department and students were present.

Prof Gangadhar Sahoo, Dean of IMS and SUM Hospital inaugurated the programme in the presence of Medical Superintendent, Prof Pusparaj Samantasinhar, Additional Dean Dr Ajay Kumar Jena, Head of the department of Pediatrics Dr Mamata Devi Mohanty, president of Bhubaneswar City Branch of IAP Dr Naresh Chandra Acharya and secretary Dr Susruta Das. 

Dr Mamata Devi Mohanty and Dr Biswajit Mishra moderated the discussion while Dr Mrutyunjaya Dash and Dr Braja Kishore Behera coordinated the CME.
