Cuttack: Renowned social worker and journalist Niranjan Rath passed away at a private hospital in Cuttack following a brief illness. He was 78.
Rath, who was the national secretary of Lok Sevak Mandal, breathed his last on Thursday night while undergoing treatment at hospital, sources said.
A multifaceted personality, Rath was known for his contributions as a writer and journalist. He had previously served as the editor, publisher, and printer of the esteemed Odia daily newspaper ‘The Samaj’. His dedication to social work and commitment to the field of journalism earned him respect and admiration from various quarters.
Rath’s demise has sent shockwaves through the literary and journalistic fraternity, with condolences pouring in from prominent figures.
Expressing grief over his demise, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said Rath was known for his simplicity and dedication to social service and journalism. “His demise has causes irreplaceable loss to journalism,” the CM said in a post on X.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also expressed deep sorrow and said Rath was a humble, soft-spoken, and compassionate individual. “Despite holding several important positions, his lifestyle remained remarkably simple,” he said.
Expressing deep grief, BJP’s Odisha unit president Manmohan Samal said Rath was liked by all for his simplicity and dedication to social work.
