Auckland: For hockey enthusiasts in Odisha, seeing “Odisha” emblazoned on the jerseys of India’s national teams is always a source of immense pride. That pride reached new heights on Sunday as the Indian women’s hockey team secured a commanding 2-0 victory over hosts New Zealand in the final of the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup 2025-26, with Odisha’s own Sunelita Toppo playing a starring role.

The triumph marked India’s second title in the tournament after their inaugural win in 2022. More significantly for the team, it earned direct promotion back to the elite FIH Hockey Women’s Pro League for the next season following relegation the previous year. India remained unbeaten throughout the campaign in Auckland, showcasing clinical finishing and rock-solid defence.

In the final at the North Harbour National Hockey Centre, India struck early. Navneet Kaur opened the scoring in the 4th minute with a powerful penalty corner conversion. Sunelita Toppo, the 19-year-old forward from Kukuda village in Sundargarh district, then doubled the lead in the 15th minute by deflecting a sharp drag-flick from Deepika. The young midfielder/forward’s goal proved decisive as India’s disciplined defence, highlighted by goalkeeper Savita’s crucial saves and Lalremsiami’s composure, who earned Player of the Match,, thwarted New Zealand’s attempts to mount a comeback.

A Proud Moment for Odisha

Sunelita’s contribution added a special layer of celebration back home. Hailing from a farming family in Rajgangpur block, the talented player has risen rapidly through the ranks, representing Odisha at national levels before making her mark with the senior Indian team. Her goal not only boosted India’s lead but symbolised the growing talent pipeline from Odisha’s hockey nurseries, particularly in tribal-dominated districts like Sundergarh.

This victory represents a “double win” for the state: national glory combined with individual recognition for one of its rising stars. Odisha has long been a powerhouse in Indian hockey, producing numerous national and international talents, and moments like these further inspire the next generation.

Deepika emerged as a tournament standout, finishing as the joint-top scorer with six goals alongside USA’s Ashley Sessa. India’s path to the title included pool wins over USA (3-2), Japan (2-1), and Uruguay (3-2), followed by a dominant 6-0 semi-final thrashing of Chile.

Hockey India announced cash rewards of Rs 3 lakh for each player and Rs 1.5 lakh for support staff to recognise the achievement.
