Bhubaneswar: A low pressure has formed over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha-West Bengal coasts, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Thursday.

The system took shape at around 3 am under the influence of a cyclonic circulation that lay over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha coast the previous day. “It’s likely to become more marked during the next 2-3 days,” it added.

According to the Tropical Weather Outlook, scattered to broken low and medium clouds with embedded intense to very intense convection persist over Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea, Arakan coast, Gulf of Martaban and Tenasserim coast.

The system, however, is unlikely to intensify into a depression over the next 168 hours.

Impact on Odisha

Under the influence of this low pressure area, several parts of Odisha are likely to experience significant rainfall till July 8. Many regions in the state have already recorded heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours, with ongoing activity expected to intensify. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, heavy to very heavy spells are likely across Odisha from July 2-6. Red warning has been issued for Koraput and Malkangiri on June 3-4.
