Baripada: A 15-year-old girl allegedly died by suicide after consuming a poisonous substance when her family members reportedly snatched and broke her mobile phone at a village in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Thursday.
According to information, the incident took place at Gagapal village located in Kaptipada area of the district.
Sources said the girl was watching videos on her mobile phone at home when her mother and maternal uncle took away the device. Earlier, her father had reportedly complained about her excessive mobile phone use and had asked the maternal uncle to seize it.
When the family allegedly snatched and smashed the phone after she refused to hand it over, the girl became upset and threatened to consume poison. She then locked herself inside a room and allegedly consumed insecticide kept in the house.
Family members rushed her to the Udala Hospital for treatment. However, she died shortly after being admitted.
On being informed, police visited the site and launched an investigation into the incident to ascertain the circumstances that led to the girl’s death.
