Odisha Govt Prepared: Conditions Favourable For Cyclone, Says IMD DG
Bhubaneswar: India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director Genetal (DG) Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Wednesday said that the conditions seem favourable for the formation of a cyclone over the Bay of Bengal in the coming days.
“Conditions look favourable for a cyclone. The cyclonic circulation over Andaman Sea will likely develop into a low pressure area (LPA) by May 6. The system will move in a North-Westerly direction and intensify into a depression. Projection of intensity and place of landfall will be possible only after formation of low pressure area,” he said.
IMD scientist Umashankar Das too said that the path and intensity of the probable cyclone was not clear yet and will be known only after the formation of low-pressure area. “There is forecast for Nor’wester for the next four-five days. Coastal Odisha will experience thunderstorm with rainfall in the next 24 hours,” he said.
A cyclonic circulation formed over South Andaman Sea and its neighbourhood on Wednesday morning. A low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region around May 6 and it is very likely to move north-westwards and intensify gradually into a depression during the subsequent 48hours, the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar said on Wednesday.
If it intensifies into a cyclone, it will be named Cyclone Asani.
Odisha Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mahapatra on Wednesday said that the state government was fully prepared although it was still waiting for more clarity on the weather system in the next three days.
Law Minister Pratap Jena also said that the government was fully prepared with arrangements.
State Food Supplies & Consumer Welfare Minister Ranendra Pratap Swain urged people to avoid panic buying.
Swain asked people not to buy and stock essential items unnecessarily in view of the possible cyclone. It might cause artificial shortage in the market with traders taking advantage of the situation, he said.
Saying that the state government was fully prepared to deal with the situation, he warned black marketers of stringent action. There is surplus food and other essentials in the market and there is no need to worry.
