Odisha Registers 29.4% Surplus Rainfall In September

Bhubaneswar: Odisha received an average rainfall of 300.1 mm against the long-term average (LTA) of 231.9 mm, registering a surplus of 29.4 per cent in September.

Kendrapara district received the highest rainfall of 653.0 mm (175.2 per cent surplus) and Jharsuguda district the lowest of 122.3 mm (42.0 per cent deficit), according to a post by Special Relief Commissioner, Odisha.

The cumulative rainfall of the state from June 1 to September 30 remained 1292.2 mm against the LTA of 1144.3 mm, which is again a surplus of 12.9 per cent.

Eleven districts received more than 19 per cent surplus rain during this four-month-long period. They are  Kalahandi, Puri, Malkangiri, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Khordha, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Koraput and Rayagada.

The remaining 19 districts received normal rainfall (+ 19 per cent to – 19 per cent).

Malkanagiri district received the highest rainfall of 2074.2 mm (44.9 per cent surplus) and Nayagarh district received the lowest of 950.0 mm (5.7 per cent deficit) during this period.

Going by the block-wise rainfall data, 112 blocks received surplus rainfall of more than 19 per cent, while it was normal for 171 blocks. A total of 27 blocks received deficit rainfall (shortfall of >19 per cent up to 39 per cent) while it was severe (shortfall of >39 per cent up to 59 per cent) for four blocks during June-July-August-September, cumulatively.

There were total 50 rainy days during June to September against the normal average of 52.4. These can be segregated into 8.1 rainy days in June, 15.6 in July, 15.9 in August and 10.4 in September..

The average rainfall of the state recorded on September 30 came to 1.0 mm.

Seventeen districts of Odisha have received sporadic rainfall during the last 24 hours, the highest being 5.4 mm in Dhenkanal district. There was no rainfall in the remaining 13 districts, the post added.
