Bhubaneswar: Formally taking over the probe into the Odisha police sub-inspector (SI) recruitment scam, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has reportedly registered a case and initiated the process of inquiry.
As per information, the central probe agency has registered a case at its Bhubaneswar branch after the Union government issued an official notification for the purpose.
Sources said a dedicated team, led by an officer of the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), will conduct a thorough probe into the scandal.
So far, the Crime Branch of Odisha Police had been conducting the investigation into the alleged irregularities in police SI recruitment in the state. The Crime Branch has reportedly handed over all probe-related documents to the CBI.
Sources said the CBI initiated the investigation process on Thursday. As per information, as the Crime Branch has already arrested almost all individuals directly involved in the scam, the CBI will now focus on identifying and apprehending those who operated behind the scenes.
During its probe, the Crime Branch suspected that the irregularities might have links beyond Odisha, potentially involving networks in Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. Investigators also pointed to the possible role of an interstate criminal gang in the racket.
On Wednesday, the Crime Branch arrested Sagar Gouda, a close associate of the alleged mastermind Shankar Prusty. Shankar allegedly maintained contact with agents through Sagar, who was said to be operating the Digha module linked to the scam.
The Crime Branch has already arrested 126 individuals so far, including 114 SI aspirants. The Berhampur Vigilance Court has granted bail to all 114 candidates.
Amid growing concerns, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had recommended a CBI probe into the case. The Centre subsequently issued a notification authorising the CBI to investigate, supervise and take necessary action in the case. The mandate covers all related offences, including attempts, abetments and conspiracies linked to the recruitment scam.
Sources suggest that the findings of the SI recruitment scam probe may expose connections to other examination-related irregularities.
The Crime Branch may assist the CBI if any additional evidence or information emerges during the course of the investigation, police said.
