Bhubaneswar: A young man from Odisha’s Ganjam district lost his life as Ukraine launched one of its largest drone strikes on Russia on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as A Rameya, a resident of Madhabandha village under Chikiti block. He had traveled to Russia about a month ago in search of employment.
According to sources, a friend of Rameya informed his family about his death, following which, they approached the authorities during a grievance hearing at Chikiti and appealed to the Ganjam Collector Keerthi Vasan V to facilitate the repatriation of his mortal remains. “We offer condolences to the family. The district administration is in touch with the office of the Resident Commissioner in Delhi. All details have been provided to them. They will contact the Indian Embassy as per the protocol to facilitate repatriation of the deceased’s mortal remains to Odisha,” the Collector told reporters.
The incident occurred during a massive overnight Ukrainian drone barrage on May 17, which Russian authorities described as one of the biggest attacks on the capital region since the war began. Air defences reportedly intercepted hundreds of drones, but strikes caused damage, fires, and casualties, including at sites near Moscow such as the oil refinery area.
On Sunday, the Indian Embassy in Moscow confirmed that one Indian worker was killed and three others were injured in the Moscow region attack. “Embassy officials have visited the location and met the injured workers in the hospital,” the post on social media read.
Meanwhile, a pall of gloom descended on the village after news of Rameya’s death reached his family members.
