Shenzen: Popular smartphone maker OnePlus on Monday announced its entry into the television market.
Pete Lau, the CEO of OnePlus, said that they have “been a team of dreamers, united in mission to share the best technology with the world.”
Lau stated that the decision to enter the TV market came from the fact that they believe the four main environments, where content is consumed i.e. home, workplace, commute and ‘being on-the-move’. He added that the home environment is ‘the most important environment experience’.
The OnePlus TV will have ‘intelligent connectivity’, ‘premium flagship design’ and also ‘premium image quality and audio experience’, according to the release. The TV could have 5G according to some reports.
It will be a smart TV, as Lau stated their intention to build a ‘connected home experience’. There is no word on the size of the TV but it is safe to speculate that it will be a large screen TV with top specs.
Lau also emphasised the importance of the OnePlus community and its role in the development of its products. The company has now launched a new naming contest for the TV on the community.
The winner of the contest will get a OnePlus TV along with an all-expenses paid trip to the launch event. The top 10 finalists of the contest will get a pair of OnePlus Bullets earphones.
OnePlus’s move into TV is similar to rival Xiaomi, which has been successfully selling its TVs in India.
