New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised school students of Odisha for keeping the coastline in the state clean and free of litter while addressing his monthly radio programme, ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on Sunday.
PM Modi said that coastal areas are facing many environmental challenges. Climate change remains a major threat to marine ecosystems and the litter on the beaches is disturbing. “It becomes our responsibility to make serious and continuous efforts for addressing these challenges. I would like to talk about efforts of coastal cleaning in the coastal areas of the country Swachh Sagar – Surakshit Sagar,” he said.
While elaborating on the efforts made under the campaign, which started on July 5 and culminated on September 17, he mentioned about more than 20,000 school students in Odisha, who took a pledge in three days to inspire their family members and others for the Swachh Sagar – Surakshit Sagar initiative.
“While Public participation in this was a sight to behold, many cleanliness-related programmes were seen for the entire two and a half months. I would like to congratulate all the people who took part in this campaign,” he added.
In March, PM Modi praised 22-year-old Rahul Maharana, a native of Ambadiha village in Khurda district, for keeping the environment clean in Puri by clearing plastic garbage, while narrating stories of some people rendering selfless service to society in different states.
