Bhubaneswar: A day after the recovery of the body of a girl student of the Rama Devi Women’s University on a roadside in Mulapala under Kuakhia police limits in Jajpur district, the police claimed to have identified the two accused who had brought the body of the deceased on a scooter.

SP (Jajpur) Rahul PR informed the media that the two accused were identified, but refused to divulge further details.

However, police sources revealed that one of the two accused belonged to Bhubaneswar.

Police have intensified the investigation on the basis of the mobile call records of the deceased student, identified as Jharaphula Nayak of Marundeipasi village in Mayurbhanj district.

Meanwhile, the complicity of a girl in this case has come to the fore. According to police sources, in her last message to her brother on social media, the deceased had said that she was staying at the house of her friend Sonali.

Earlier on Wednesday, Jharphula’s father, Ramakant Nayak told the media in Jajpur that his daughter had left for Bhubaneswar on January 24. “I saw her board a bus around 5 am. She had gone to Bhubaneswar to attend the birthday function of Chakradhar Sir’s daughter on January 25,” he said.

He further said Chakradhar Sir, who was Jharaphula’s local guardian in Bhubaneswar, dropped her at Jaydev Vihar square next day around 11 am. But she got down from the bus at Vani Vihar as she was not feeling well.

Later, she informed her father that she would board next bus. “Later, I could not contact her as her mobile phone switched was off at 12 pm. However, in the evening, she had a chat with her brother Pulasta Nayak on her mobile phone in which she told that she staying in the house of her friend Sonali and will board the bus at 11 pm,” he said.

Nayak further said Jharaphula was in a relationship with a youth, named Nandu, of Banki in Khurda district. Nandu was working in a pipeline project in Jajpur.

Stating that he suspected Nandu’s involvement in his daughter’s murder, Nayak demanded a detailed investigation by police and arrest of the accused.

Asked about the incident, the Vice-Chancellor of RD Women’s University, Aparajita Chowdhury, said that the deceased, a Plus III second-year student of Philosophy Honours, was staying at the tribal hostel, but vacated the hostel in March last year in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Besides, the Hostel Superintendent, Jyotirmayee Acharya, said as the deceased was a second year student, she was not allowed to stay as the hostel as per government guidelines, which only allows final year students to stay at the hostel.
