Chennai: The divorce proceedings between Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay and his wife Sangeetha Sornalingam officially came to an end on Friday after the latter withdrew her petition before a family court in Chengalpattu, near Chennai.
Sangeetha, who appeared before the court through video conferencing, informed the judge that she no longer wished to pursue the case.
Following her submission, notice was issued to the respondent’s counsel, who raised no objection to the withdrawal.
The court then permitted Sangeetha to withdraw the petition and granted her liberty to file a fresh petition in the future, if required.
The legal battle had begun in February, when Sangeetha approached the family court seeking dissolution of her marriage.
She had alleged that Vijay was involved in an extramarital relationship with a female actor – widely believed to be Trisha Krishnan — which she claimed to have discovered in 2021. Vijay had assured Sangeetha that he would end the relationship, but allegedly continued it.
Sangeetha cited irreconcilable differences, sought permanent alimony and requested permission to continue living at the couple’s Neelankarai residence in Chennai.
Following multiple adjournments over the last few months, Sangeetha indicated that she intended to withdraw the petition during a hearing on June 15. Last month, neither Vijay nor Sangeetha appeared before the court in another hearing, with their respective lawyers informing the judge that both were unable to attend in person.
Vijay and Sangeetha, who tied the knot in August 1999, have a son (Jason Sanjay) and daughter (Dhivya Sasha).
Actor-turned-politician Vijay was sworn in as chief minister after his party TVK emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, ending the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK. TVK formed the government with the support of Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML.
