United Nations: In a sharp attack on Pakistan at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), India accused the country of sponsoring terrorism and repressing people in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).

Anupama Singh, first secretary at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, described Pakistan as a “living example of a Frankenstein state which is shocked when its own monster bites back.”

Pakistan’s defence minister had publicly boasted of “hosting, training and deploying terrorists as state policy”, she said while addressing the council, adding that it was paradoxical for Pakistan to portray itself as a victim of terrorism.

“Jammu and Kashmir was, is and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India. The only unresolved issue is Pakistan’s illegal occupation of Indian territories and their return,” Anupama said, reiterating India’s position on the issue, as reported by News18.

Pakistan’s propaganda could not hide the reality of repression in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, she said and referred to the “ongoing tragedy in Rawalakot”, the killing of hundreds of civilians and the crackdown across the region.

“Decades of military land grabs, demographic engineering and the denial of basic freedoms have brought matters to a point where even demand for bread, electricity, rights and dignity are met with bullets and brutality,” she said, adding that “an illegal and illegitimate occupation can be sustained only through force.”

Clearing the air on the Indus Waters Treaty, Anupama said India’s position was well known and argued that it defied logic for “a state which exports terror as an instrument of policy” to seek the benefits of cooperation based on goodwill and friendship.

The 1960 treaty was outdated and could not remain “frozen in time” despite profound changes over the past six decades, she further said.

“Instead of coveting Indian territories, Pakistan would serve itself and its people far better by putting its own house in order. Its seasonal theatrics in this council have long outlived any novelty,” Anupama added.
