Ladakh: Activist Sonam Wangchuk on Tuesday said he will join a protest planned in New Delhi on June 6 by the Cockroach Janta Party if authorities do not act by June 5, backing the group’s call for Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to step down.

Wangchuk announced his conditional support in posts on X and Instagram, saying he had discussed the matter with the protest group’s founder, Abhijeet Dipke, and reviewed data and concerns shared with him before deciding to endorse the demonstration.

Protest Call

The Cockroach Janta Party, a satirical political collective that has gained traction on social media recently, had earlier flagged a rally for June 6 at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, demanding the resignation of the education minister over what it describes as problems in the education system and examination processes. Dipke told reporters that Wangchuk’s backing followed “a series of discussions in which data and representations were shared regarding the movement’s concerns.” Dipke had hinted on social media that a “well-known public figure” would back the movement. The hint was confirmed when Wangchuk publicly announced his support, as reported by The New Indian Express.

In a video message, Wangchuk said his decision was driven by wider worries about the state of education in India. He noted that while the immediate debate referred to exams such as NEET, CUET and CBSE board processes, the underlying problem went beyond any single test. He said the larger concern was “about systemic challenges in education and the need for meaningful improvements in learning outcomes, particularly in government schools and rural areas.”

Decades of work in remote regions, he added, had shown him recurring gaps in infrastructure, teaching quality and policy implementation. Referring to national initiatives, Wangchuk described the National Education Policy as “a positive step in principle,” but said its success depended on effective ground-level implementation. He underscored that despite reform announcements, basic schooling conditions in many areas remain poor and raised questions about whether India could meet long-term development goals, including its 2047 vision, without fixing foundational education issues.

Accountability & Public Trust

Wangchuk stressed the role of accountability in democratic governance, particularly for sectors like education that affect millions. He said public trust depends not only on policy formulation but also on execution and monitoring. He stated that if no corrective action or response is taken by June 5, he would travel to Delhi and take part in the protest at Jantar Mantar on June 6, adding that the decision “was not taken lightly and was based on his assessment of the issues raised.”

The Cockroach Janta Party said the June 6 demonstration will be peaceful and open to those who share the group’s concerns. The movement — youth-driven and active mainly online — has been highlighting issues of education governance and examination transparency. Dipke said he will return to India on June 6 to join the protest and indicated the event aims to spotlight broader student issues, including “examination conduct, transparency, and systemic reform in education.”

Rising Attention On Social Media

The planned protest has attracted attention on social platforms, drawing support and criticism alike as users debate the group’s demands and the participation of public figures such as Wangchuk. Wangchuk reiterated his priority is improving education outcomes in underserved regions, saying policy intent alone is insufficient and “real change will only be visible when implementation reaches the classroom level effectively and consistently.” He called for constructive dialogue on education reform and said any movement seeking change should aim to strengthen systems for students rather than create division.

The June 6 gathering at Jantar Mantar is expected to bring together participants from diverse backgrounds and focus on awareness of education-related concerns and governance shortfalls.
