Bhubaneswar: SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM) has once again facilitated a life-saving organ donation, as the kidneys of a six-year-old boy who succumbed to brain death after an accident were donated to two hospitals in Bhubaneswar on Monday, giving hope to two sick children awaiting transplant.

The child had suffered severe traumatic brain injury after a heavy iron gate had fallen on him at Baripada.

After being treated at a hospital in Balasore initially, the child was brought to SUM Ultimate Medicare on May 7. But despite all efforts by the medical team, there was no improvement in his condition.

The doctors conducted the Apnea test twice after which the child was declared as brain dead. After being counseled by the medical team, the distraught parents, decided to donate the child’s organs so that it could help save the lives of other sick children.

The hospital authorities got in touch with the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) and it was decided to rush the boy’s kidneys to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar and a private hospital. The organs were sent to the two hospitals after being retrieved.

This is the fourth time that SUMUM has been instrumental in ensuring organ donation and so far, 13 different organs had been retrieved from brain dead patients and rushed to different hospitals in the country and within the state to save lives. CEO of SUMUM Swetapadma Dash said the hospital will continue to promote organ donation.

SUMUM has been engaged in the noble practice of organ donation and trying to popularise the same, Founder President of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA) Manojranjan Nayak said, adding the hospital will continue to encourage the same.
