Burla: Accelerating Western region’s transition towards clean energy, TP Western Odisha Distribution Limited (TPWODL) has enabled an annual reduction of nearly 1.32 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions through the installation of 38,638 rooftop solar systems with a cumulative installed capacity of 111.42 MW across its operational area.

The milestone, achieved under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and TPWODL’s consumer-friendly ULA Model, marks a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions while making solar energy more affordable and accessible for consumers.

Of the total installations, 38,025 rooftop solar systems have been commissioned under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana for domestic consumers, while 613 commercial establishments have adopted rooftop solar, taking the cumulative installed capacity to 111.42 MW. During the last month alone, an additional 11.922 MW of rooftop solar capacity was added, reflecting the growing pace of renewable energy adoption across Western Odisha.

Speaking on the milestone, Parveen Verma, CEO, TPWODL said “The growing adoption of rooftop solar reflects consumers’ increasing commitment to clean energy. Through the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and our ULA Model, we are making solar power affordable and accessible while enabling every installation to contribute towards reducing carbon emissions and building a more sustainable Western Odisha.”

Beyond environmental benefits, the rooftop solar initiative is generating substantial economic gains for consumers. In June 2026, as many as 10,112 households across TPWODL’s operational area recorded zero-unit electricity bills, demonstrating the growing financial advantages of generating clean energy from rooftops.

The environmental impact of the initiative extends beyond carbon reduction. The clean electricity generated through these rooftop solar systems is estimated to save nearly 1.30 lakh tonnes of coal annually, while creating an ecological benefit equivalent to planting approximately 60 lakh mature trees every year, making rooftop solar a key contributor to climate action and sustainable development.

The rapid adoption of rooftop solar has been supported by attractive financial incentives available under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, jointly funded by the Government of India and the Government of Odisha. Consumers installing a 3kW rooftop solar system costing around Rs 2 lakh are eligible for financial assistance of up to Rs 1.38 lakh. Similarly, a 2kW system costing approximately Rs 1.40 lakh attracts subsidies of up to Rs 1.10 lakh, substantially reducing the upfront investment.

To make rooftop solar accessible to a wider section of consumers, TPWODL has also introduced its 1 kW ULA Model, under which eligible households can install rooftop solar by paying only Rs 1,875. TPWODL undertakes the complete installation process and provides a five-year warranty on equipment along with a 25-year performance warranty on solar panels, ensuring long-term reliability and hassle-free operation.

Consumers interested in installing rooftop solar may contact their nearest TPWODL Section Office or the Renewable Energy (RE) Cell at 9078682894 for further information and assistance.
