Train Services Resume As Farmers End 169-Day Dharna On Railway Tracks

Amritsar: Train services resumed in Amritsar after farmers unions suspended their 169-day ‘dharna’ on tracks, ahead of the wheat harvest season.

“Dharna at Jandiala Guru Railway Station suspended for the time being and passenger trains are operational now,” Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Amritsar Gurpreet Singh Khaira was quoted as saying by ANI.

A large group of farmers had been taking turns to squat on railway tracks near Amritsar since the Union government enacted the agricultural laws in September 2020.

Thousands of farmers have been protesting at different points of the Delhi border since November 26 last, demanding the withdrawal of the three contentious laws – Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; Farmers Empowerment and Protection Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act 2020; and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.
