A tsunami warning has been issued after an earthquake measuring 6.8 on Richter scale hit Vanuatu, an island nation located in south Pacific Ocean, on Wednesday.
US Geological Survey (USGS), which initially put the magnitude at 7.1, said the earthquake was recorded at a depth of 56 miles and about 12 miles north-west of the island and 210 miles northwest of the capital Port Vila.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that hazardous waves were possible for coasts within 185 miles of the earthquake’s epicentre.
