Bhubaneswar: Amid the gloom of COVID-19, two newborns have given Odisha a reason to cheer.

An 8-day-old baby girl of Ganjam and a 25-day-old baby boy of Nuapada have recovered from the deadly disease and discharged from the hospital.

According to sources, the baby boy got infected soon after birth. The hospital staff treated him with utmost care and he recovered from the infection within a week.

Appreciating the dedication of doctors and supporting staff in Nuapada, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday tweeted that this would inspire others to stay strong during the pandemic.

The baby boy was born prematurely.

Appreciate the dedication of doctors & supporting staff in Nuapada, for successfully treating a 25-day-old baby, born prematurely who contracted #COVID19. The baby girl was born to frontline worker Diptimayee Devi, who got infected during pregnancy and died a day after the delivery on May 30.

The COVID test of the newborn was also found to be positive. She, however, slowly recovered from the infection and was completely cured of the disease on June 4.

Later, Ganjam Collector Vijay Amruta Kulange handed over Rs 10,000 under the ICDS fund to the bereaved family and announced that Rs 25,000 will be deposited in the name of the newborn under the Sukanya scheme.

“As Diptimayee was an Anganwadi worker, the administration will take steps to provide her kin adequate compensation as per government guidelines,” he added.

In May, a newborn girl had recovered from the disease after being on a ventilator at a hospital in Bhubaneswar for 10 days. She had tested positive for the infection 15 days after her birth.
