Mumbai: Comedian Vir Das took to his X account on Monday to clear confusion around his identity in a viral social media post, amid the West Bengal election results.
Das explained in his post that he is repeatedly tagged whenever some adverse incidents take place in Bengal, with messages suggesting a connection or accountability.
Addressing the trend, he firmly distanced himself from such assumptions, clarifying that his surname does not imply he is Bengali.
Putting all connections of his name to Bengal to rest, Vir said, “Just putting it out there before today unfolds. My name is Das, but I’m actually not Bengali. I’m half UP, half Bihari.”
In his trademark style, Vir called out “faceless” accounts on X, highlighting how celebrities like him are often trolled over political issues and routinely mass-tagged without any accountability.
“So, typically when anything happens in Bengal I get tagged by a bunch of facelesses (that’s a word) saying, ‘Look what happened in your Bengal bro’,” he wrote.
Distancing himself from the presumed identity of being Bengali, he said, “Just putting it out there before today unfolds. My name is Das, but I’m actually not Bengali.”
A surprised X user wrote, “HALF BIHARI??? How am i learning of it only today. Howw. Why have we not totally claimed you yet?”
Vir concluded his post by extending a “Good luck” message for the verdict day in the West Bengal elections.
