Bengaluru: A 32-year-old woman from Bengaluru has confessed that she caused the death of her husband by beating him with a wooden baton, normally used in the kitchen, for returning home drunk.
Initially, Shruti had denied any connection and said that her husband died while she was asleep. Based on her statement, the police had registered and unnatural death case and sent her husband’s body for autopsy. The autopsy report revealed that the body had ante-mortem injury marks.
When confronted with this fact on Saturday, Shruti broke down and confessed that her husband Baskar (42) had returned home drunk despite her warning. He then picked a fight with her, following which Shruti lost her cool and started beating her with the baton that is a sort of rolling pin used to make finger millet balls or Ragi Mudde. This short wooden item is known as the Mudde Kolu and is used to ground the millet into a fine paste.
“I did not intend to kill him. I was simply tired of his returning home drunk and creating a ruckus. I had asked him to mend his ways. He did not listen. I simply flew into a rage, picked up the Kolu and started hitting him with it. He collapsed sometime later. I realised that he had died. I had to lie for the sake of our children,” Shruti told the police.
Baskar and Shruti were married for 12 years and have two children. They lived in the Suddagunte Palya area of Bengaluru.
“We have arrested her. Prima facie, it seems to be a case of culpable homicide and not murder. However, we shall speak to people to know more about the couple and their lifestyle. We will also seek legal opinion in the matter after we have all details,” a senior police official said.
