Guwahati: At least 25 people died across the Northeast after relentless rain triggered widespread landslides and flash floods, officials on Sunday said.
In Guwahati, a mudslide buried several homes. At least five people — including three members of a single family died in the incident that occurred as heavy rain lashed the city. It prompted fresh warnings from local authorities. Floods caused three more casualties, including two in Golaghat and one in Lakhimpur.
Neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh at least seven died after a vehicle was swept away by surging floodwaters. In a separate incident, two people drowned. The state’s toll stands at nine.
In the past 24 hours, eight deaths have been reported across Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya. According to the officials, the deaths have been caused due to a combination of flash flooding and landslides triggered by downpour.

Three days of relentless rainfall have brought daily life in Imphal, Manipur to a standstill. Waterlogging has been reported from several parts of the city. Authorities have issued flood warnings and urged evacuation of residents living along the floodplains of the Imphal River.
Nearly 1,500 tourists were stranded in various parts of north Sikkim. The main road was blocked due to landslides triggered by incessant rains. One person was killed, two injured, and eight others went missing when a vehicle carrying 11 tourists plunged into the Teesta river in Mangan district earlier this week.
In Assam, a total of 17 districts were hit by floods and landslides, affecting over 78,000 people. Lakhimpur is the worst-hit district with more than 41,600 people affected, reported the PTI.
What has the IMD said?
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of continued heavy rainfall across the region in the coming days. It has issued red and orange alerts for parts of Assam and issued orange and yellow alerts for the rest of the northeast.
