New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday discussed latest developments in West Asia and the path ahead at a time when the apparently promising understanding between Tehran and Washington has come under fresh strain.

During a telephonic conversation between the two leaders, PM Modi raised the issue of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and stressed on its importance for India and the world.

Strait of Hormuz is a critical waterway through which 20% of global petroleum liquids and liquefied natural gas (LNG) is transported from the Gulf to different global destinations. In the tussle between Iran and the US, the strait has been blocked by both parties, hampering free movement of commercial vessels.

In a post on his X handle, PM Modi wrote that he had welcomed the progress made in negotiations and expressed hope that continued efforts will lead to lasting peace in the region.

A day earlier, Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei thanked Modi for his greetings on the occasion of Eid al-Adha.

“His Excellency Shri Narendra Modi, Honourable Prime Minister of the Republic of India, I have received Your Excellency’s message of congratulations on the occasion of the blessed Eid al-Adha. While expressing my sincere appreciation and extending my reciprocal congratulations, I am confident that the historic friendship between our two countries, founded on mutual respect and shared interests, will continue to be further strengthened and expanded through the efforts of our two governments. I pray to Almighty God for the prosperity and continued success of the Government and the great people of India,” the message from Mojtaba read.

PM Modi has received an invitation to the burial ceremonies for the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to diplomatic sources.

Modi is unlikely to attend. Bihar Governor Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita are expected to attend the funeral ceremony on behalf of the Indian government, ANI reported.
