Mumbai: SS Rajamouli’s ‘Varanasi’ is among the most eagerly awaited Indian films, and a reported synopsis has now surfaced online, offering a possible glimpse into the much-guarded storyline.
Starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran, the film reportedly revolves around an asteroid threat, an ancient cosmic artefact and a high-stakes mission spanning multiple locations.
According to a Gulte report, the reported story is set in 2027, when an asteroid named Shambhavi is said to be on a collision course with Varanasi, posing a catastrophic threat.
Mahesh Babu reportedly plays Rudhra, an archaeologist and explorer recruited for a high-stakes mission to recover an ancient cosmic artefact. He is joined by Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ Mandakini, a historian and skilled marksman.
The synopsis doing the rounds online reads, “In the year 2027, the world faces an existential crisis as a massive asteroid named Shambhavi is on a direct collision course with the holy city of Varanasi. A rugged archaeologist and explorer, Rudhra, is recruited for a high-stakes, globetrotting mission to recover an ancient cosmic artifact, joined by Mandakini, a fierce historian and skilled marksman.”
Their quest reportedly takes them across Africa, Antarctica and Europe, while they are pursued by Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Kumbha, who is said to be the antagonist.
The synopsis further states, “Their quest becomes a high-tech sci-fi thriller racing across the jungles of Africa, the icy wastes of Antarctica, and the landscapes of Europe, pursued by the tech-genius villain Kumbha. The key to stopping a future catastrophe lies hidden within the city’s mythical past.”
However, the makers are yet to officially confirm the reported synopsis or the plot details.
While Rudhra is expected to be Mahesh Babu’s primary character, the actor has also confirmed that he will portray Lord Rama in a particular portion of the film.
‘Varanasi’ is currently in production and is being filmed across several domestic and international locations.
The ambitious project is expected to rely heavily on VFX to bring its expansive world and Rajamouli’s vision to life.
According to reports, the film is being mounted on a budget estimated at around Rs 900 crore to Rs 1,000 crore. However, the makers are yet to officially confirm the figure.
Rajamouli recently indicated that filming is expected to wrap up by October this year. ‘Varanasi’ is slated to hit theatres on April 7, 2027.
