Kolkata: Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee will lead a sit-in protest on June 2 against the assaults on TMC MPs Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee.
The party which lost power to the BJP in the recent state Assembly polls will also hold statewide protests on June 1 at the ward, anchal (circle) and block levels.
Mamata’s nephew and TMC national general secretary Abhishek, Lok Sabha MP from Diamond Harbour, had eggs thrown at him on Saturday while visiting families affected by post-poll violence in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas district.
According to TMC, Abhishek was assaulted with bricks, stones and eggs, and sustained multiple injuries including his eye. The party also alleged that it was a “meticulously pre-planned attack by BJP goons”.
On Sunday, Lok Sabha MP from Sreerampur Kalyan Banerjee alleged he was attacked near Chanditala police station in Hooghly district while he was on way to submit a deputation regarding post-poll violence.
Calling it an “attempt to murder”, Banerjee claimed BJP workers assaulted him outside the police station.
The BJP said all six persons involved in the assault on Abhishek have been arrested.
Leaders of the ruling party in West Bengal claimed that the attack on Abhishek was due to internal factionalism within the TMC.
On Kalyan’s claim of being attacked, the saffron party released a video showing the TMC MP holding his head and falling down. Dismissing Kalyan’s claim, the BJP described the incident as a “drama” orchestrated to gain public sympathy.
