Bhubaneswar: The well-marked low-pressure area persisted over the Bay of Bengal, triggering heavy to extremely heavy rain in several parts of Odisha.

The system now lies over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas of north coastal Odisha, Jharkhand and northwest Bay of Bengal. the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday.

The system is likely to move west-north-westwards across north Odisha and Jharkhand during the next 48 hours, it said.

Under its influence, several areas of Odisha witnessed extremely heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours with Mayurbhanj receiving intense downpour. Bangiriposhi in Mayurbhanj recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 309.2 mm during the period, according to IMD data.

Other stations in Mayurbhanj also recorded extremely heavy downpour, including Sarasakana with 297.0 mm, Jamsolaghat with 285.2 mm and Chandanpur with 259.0 mm. Apart from this, Bijatala recorded 140.0 mm, Bahalda 125.0 mm, Jamda 113.0 mm, Kusumi 104.0 mm, Nawana 99.8 mm, Chandua 94.0 mm and Baripada 73.6 mm.

In Sundargada district, Banaigarah recorded 81.0 mm and Lahunipara 75.6 mm, while Kantamal in Boudh district recorded 66.0 mm rainfall.

The IMD informed that out of the total stations, four stations recorded extremely heavy rainfall, two stations very heavy rainfall and eight stations heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours. The district-wise average rainfall data shows Sundaragada recorded 36.9 mm with a 350 per cent departure, Mayurbhanj recorded 88.1 mm with 1158 per cent large excess, Baleshwar recorded 16.5 mm with 81 per cent excess, while Jharsuguda recorded 3.7 mm with 64 per cent deficit.

For the entire state, Odisha’s actual average rainfall in the past 24 hours was 13.7 mm against the normal of 7.8 mm, marking a departure of 74 per cent.
