New Delhi: The Congress is strongly pushing for a special session of Parliament to discuss issues the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor and the India-Pakistan ceasefire.
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge both wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday requesting him to convene a special session.
In his letter to the PM, Rahul mentioned the fact that it was US President Donald Trump who first broke the news of the ceasefire between India and Pakistan on Saturday.
“Dear Prime Minister, I reiterate the unanimous request of the Opposition to convene a special session of Parliament immediately. It is crucial for the people and their representatives to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor and today’s ceasefire, first announced by US President Trump. This will also be an opportunity to demonstrate our collective resolve to meet the challenges ahead. I trust that you will consider this demand seriously and swiftly,” Rahul wrote.
Kharge backed Rahul’s request.
“In view of latest developments Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha has already written to you again conveying the unanimous request of all Opposition parties for a special session of Parliament to discuss the Pahalgam terror, Operation Sindoor and the ceasefire announcements first from Washington DC and later by the Governments of India and Pakistan. As Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, I am writing in support of this request,” Kharge wrote to Modi.
Senior MPs like Manish Tewari and Kapil Sibal also brought up the issue of US leaders announcing the truce agreement between India and Pakistan from Washington DC.
“The reality is that since 1990, whenever there has been any tension between India and Pakistan, there has been external intervention. It’s a hard truth, and you cannot hide. The way Marco Rubio announced the ceasefire, and also that a wide range of discussions will take place at a neutral place — to make it clear, it’s needed that a special session of the parliament should be called,” said Tewari.

Rajya Sabha MP Sibal demanded a special session of Parliament as well as an-all party meeting where Prime Minister Narendra Modi must be present.
Referring to Trump’s social media post in which the American President said he was proud that the US was able to help arrive at this “historic and heroic decision”, Sibal said there are many questions.
“Many questions will be raised on this tweet as well. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that for the last 48 hours talks went on. So what happened, how and why, no information has been given to us regarding this. They also stated that there will be a meeting at a neutral site. Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi also spoke with NSA Ajit Dowal,” Sibal said at a press conference.
“We will not issue any criticism today because this is not the time for criticism. We only want a special Parliament session and an all-party meeting to be called. I want to appeal to all political parties not to attend the meeting until the government assures them that the prime minister will be present at the meeting as well,” Sibal said.
We salute defence forces for befitting reply, people are with them. I had asked for a special session of Parliament, we did not get answer. Since there has been a ceasefire, we will ask again. We cannot wait till Monsson Session, if we don’t get answers, there would be acrimony. pic.twitter.com/OchNHkR38U
