New Delhi: The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), on Tuesday, withdrew its call for a march to the Delhi Police headquarters on September 5 after the Centre agreed to withdraw cases against student protesters.

The SC has also quashed all FIRs across the country against students involved in protests against the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak.

“I want to state that in view of the positive assurances of the government of India and the judicial sanctity bestowed upon them today, and in view of the order being passed by this Court, the CJP deems it appropriate to withdraw the call off the march on September 5 and looks forward to compliance with today’s order,” CJP co-convener Sourav Das said during a hearing in the Supreme Court, as reported by The Times of India.

During the day, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre and Delhi Police, informed the Court that the Centre remains committed to fulfilling all three assurances given to the CJP leadership during the meeting between the Centre and the party.

The first assurance was that the Centre would not pursue FIRs registered between July 20 and July 25. The second one was that no fresh FIRs would be registered in connection with the matter.

The Centre had also assured that compensation would be paid to families of students who died by suicide allegedly in connection with the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak.

“Centre is committed to honour the assurance given to the CJP leaders to provide compensation to the families of students who died by suicide after NEET exam cancellation; however, 3 months are needed to work out the modalities,” Mehta told the Court.

“As of now, we are committed to fulfilling all three assurances,” he submitted.

Following these submissions, the Supreme Court ordered that the FIRs registered across the country, in any state or Union Territory, over the student protests held between July 20 to July 25, should not be pursued or investigated and must be treated as closed for all intents and purposes.

The Court also quashed the FIRs over student protests which were specified in the applications filed by the Centre (Delhi Police), Bihar, West Bengal, Maharashtra and Assam.

Though only the Centre and the above-said four states filed the applications seeking to quash the FIRs, the Court extended the application of the order pan-India. The Court said that it was passing the order considering the future of the bona fide students who came to the protests, as reported by Live Law.

The Court also ordered that no state/UT shall register any fresh FIR in relation to protest incidents between July 20-25.

The Court has, however, allowed the Delhi Police to pursue one FIR against 2,873 individuals who were present in the Jantar Mantar protests as they had serious criminal antecedents.

This came a day after the Centre moved the apex court seeking to quash FIR’s registered against the student protesters allegedly involved in violence during protests over the NEET paper leak in Delhi and other states.

The Centre urged the Supreme Court to exercise its extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution to quash the FIRs registered against the protesting students.
