New Delhi: With petrol and diesel prices skyrocketing, the Central government brought some Diwali cheer for Indians on the eve of Diwali.

Excise duty on petrol will go down by Rs 5 and that on diesel by Rs 10, the Centre announced on Wednesday. The new prices will be effective from Thursday.

Come Diwali day, petrol price in Bhubaneswar should come down from Rs 111.06 to Rs 106.06 per litre, while diesel should be available at Rs 102.39 per litre (from Rs 107.39/litre).

Delhiites will be able to purchase petrol at Rs 105.04 per litre and diesel at Rs 98.42 per litre from Thursday. The corresponding prices in Mumbai will be Rs 110.85 and Rs 101.62 per litre, respectively.

Fuel prices in the country remained unchanged on Wednesday (November 3) after being hiked for seven consecutive days.

Fuel prices in the country vary in states and union territories based on local taxation (VAT) and freight charges. The other component is excise duty, which the Central government charges on auto fuels. It’s this excise duty which has been reduced by the Union government.

Global oil prices plunged on Wednesday as industry data pointed to a big build-up in crude oil and distillate stocks in the US, and pressure mounted on OPEC to increase supply, Reuters reported.
