Bhubaneswar: Odisha may continue to experience heavy rainfall till June 22 under the influence of the well-marked low-pressure area over northeast Jharkhand & adjoining Gangetic West Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Thursday.
The system is expected to move slowly northwestwards during the next 24 hours.
The weather agency has issued an orange warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall for one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda and Sambalpur districts on June 19. Heavy rainfall may also occur at one or two places in Deogarh, Angul and Bargarh.
It has highlighted potential damage to plantations, horticulture, and standing crops and minor damage could occur to loose or unsecured structures in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Sundargarh districts. Vulnerable structures, kutcha houses, walls, and huts may suffer partial damage. Additionally, power and communication lines may experience minor disruptions, and there could be major damage to kutcha roads, along with some damage to pucca roads. There is also a possibility of damage to embankments and salt pans, as well as traffic and localised flooding of roads and waterlogging in low-lying areas, which may lead to the closure of underpasses in urban regions.
Squally weather may also prevail with wind speed 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph along & off Odisha coasts on June 19, when the sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, along and off Odisha coast.
The intensity of rain is likely to decrease thereafter. Heavy rainfall may occur at one or two places in Sundargarh and Jharsuguda on June 20; Mayurbhanj on June 21; and Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar on June 22.
