Bhubaneswar: It was a proud moment for Odisha when Bollywood actress and MP Kangana Ranaut attended an event in Bhubaneswar attired in a Kotpad saree.
Kangana Ranaut appeared to have sparked excitement online after sharing a social media post featuring Odisha’s renowned Kotpad saree.
Calling it her “favourite Odisha woven Kotpad saree,” the actress once again brought national attention to the state’s rich handloom heritage. The post is now being widely shared by admirers of Odisha’s traditional textiles and craftsmanship.
Notably, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi watched a special screening of the film ‘Bharat Bhagya Vidhata’ at a cinema hall here on Friday evening, joined by Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo, ministers, actress Kangana Ranaut and other elected representatives.
Following her post, social media platforms are filled with conversations about Kangana and Kotpad. Kangana has been making heads turn with her choice of handloom sarees, perfect draping style and the confidence with which she carries the saree.
Experts said Kotpad sarees are exquisite, eco-friendly handloom textiles woven by the Mirgam tribal community in Koraput district of Odisha.
Famous for being the first Odisha handloom to receive a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, they are celebrated for their earthy organic colours, use of 100% natural dyes, and traditional tribal motifs
Kotpad sarees are made of handspun cotton or tussar silk naturally dyed using the roots of the local Aal (Indian Madder) tree.
These are eco-rriendly as the yarns are treated with cow dung, ash, and castor oil before weaving, making them incredibly soft, skin-friendly, and chemical-free.
The sarees present traditional designs representing local surroundings, including fish, crabs, axes, huts, and the fan-tailed peacock. The sarees typically feature deep maroons, rich earthy reds, coffee browns, and blacks against a cream or off-white base.
