Lucknow: Union Minister Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra will have to face trial after a court on Monday rejected his appeal to be dropped from the Lakhimpur Kheri case.
The court said that charges against Ashish and other accused persons will be framed on Tuesday.
On October 3 last year, Ashish was allegedly driving an SUV (Mahindra Thar) that ran over four farmers and a journalist at Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri during a protest march against three farm laws, which were subsequently scrapped.
Ashish was arrested a few days after the incident, following the Supreme Court’s intervention. The top court ordered an inquiry after police and local administration were accused of going slow on the investigation.
A committee headed by retired Punjab & Haryana High Court judge Rakesh Kumar Jain was appointed by SC to monitor the probe into Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
Four months after his arrest, Ashish was granted bail by the Allahabad High Court.
Videos of the car ramming farmers were all over the Internet, triggering anger and criticism of UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath and his government.
