Berhampur: A team of doctors recently extracted an 8 cm broken knife blade from the lungs of a 24-year-old man at MKCG Medical College and Hospital (MCH) in Odisha’s Berhampur city.
The blade, lodged in the body of Santosh Das of Kabisurya Nagar for three years following a stabbing incident in Bengaluru, was removed via a right thoracotomy led by Associate Professor Sarada Prasanna Sahoo of the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Department on Tuesday.
The knife fragment, measuring 8 cm long, 2.5 cm wide, and 3 mm thick, had entered Das’ body through a stab wound to his left neck. He received treatment there and appeared to have recovered. About a year ago, he developed a persistent dry cough and completed a nine-month course for tuberculosis treatment. When he began coughing up blood, his family brought him to MKCG MCH on April 19. An X-ray, CT scan, and bronchoscopy revealed the blade in his right lung.
A team of eight doctors, along with nurses and paramedical staff, performed the surgery. Fortunately, the sharp object had not damaged his vital organs. Das is now stable in the ICU under observation.
