Berhampur: Odisha Vigilance officials have apprehended ICDS supervisor B Uma Patro and junior revenue assistant Narasingha Behera, both posted at the office of the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) at Hinjilikatu in Ganjam district.

The duo was caught red-handed while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000 from an Anganwadi worker on Saturday. The accused reportedly demanded the bribe in exchange for releasing the pending house rent of an Anganwadi centre for the past 11 months.

According to Vigilance sources, the accused had threatened the Anganwadi worker that they would block the release of rent payments for the coming months if the money was not paid.

Left with no alternative, the worker complained to Vigilance authorities, who laid a trap.

A team of officials caught both Patro and Behera on the premises of the CDPO office while they were allegedly receiving the bribe from the complainant. The entire tainted amount of Rs 30,000 was recovered from their possession and seized as evidence.

Following the arrest, simultaneous searches were conducted at the residences of both accused to investigate possible disproportionate assets (DA).

Police have registered a case under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018 in connection with the incident.

Further investigation against the accused is in progress, sources said.
