Balasore: The defeat of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in the 2024 general elections in Odisha was primarily because of overconfidence, according to party MLA Goutam Buddha Das.
Addressing a public meeting in his constituency Bhograi in Balasore district, the legislator presented a analysis of the poll results and explained the reasons behind the regional party’s poor performance.
Das claimed that the party leadership and workers were of the strong belief that BJD president Naveen Patnaik had carried out extensive development work across the state. Therefore, they thought the voters would naturally support the party. However, this assumption proved to be wrong in many parts of the state, he said.
Though the people of Bhograi voted in support of Naveen Patnaik, voters in many other places did not do so, the BJD MLA stated.
“The BJD faced defeat in the last election due to overconfidence. The party leadership and workers believed that BJD president Naveen Patnaik had carried out extensive development work across the state and that voters would naturally support the party,” said Das.
However, their presumption turned out to be incorrect and the party faced defeat in the twin elections held in 2024, the legislator said.
