Islamabad: A high court in Pakistan on Thursday asked India to appoint a lawyer for death-row prisoner Kulbhushan Jadhav by April 13, PTI reported.
After the Indian Navy officer was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court on charges of espionage and terrorism in April 2017, Indian government approached International Court of Justice (ICJ) accusing Pakistan of denying consular access to Jadhav and challenging the death sentence.
In its verdict issued in July 2019, ICJ asked Pakistan to give India consular access to Jadhav and ensure review of his conviction.
The Islamabad High Court’s three-member bench asked India to nominate a lawyer from Pakistan for Jadhav, but New Delhi insisted on an Indian lawyer be appointed to argue Jadhav’s case.
On Thursday, the court after hearing arguments by Attorney General of Pakistan, asked India to appoint a lawyer for Jadhav by April 13.
