New Delhi: Ever since a controversy erupted after the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR), Hyderabad, invited Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant to attend its convocation as the chief guest, the institute has been in the spotlight as a large group of students opposed the CJI’s presence.

The ‘revolt’ against the CJI has not gone down well with the Bar Council of India (BCI), which has directed that no student graduating from NALSAR in 2026 be enrolled as an advocate by any State Bar Council until further orders.

“Till further orders, no student of NALSAR University of Law, who has obtained the Law Degree in the year 2026, shall be enrolled by any State Bar Council as an Advocate,” BCI chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra stated in the order.

It’s a major setback for the graduating students of one of India’s premier law institutes as the BCI’s decision has raised concerns over their professional prospects of joining the legal profession.

The Vice-Chancellor of NALSAR has been asked to furnish an authenticated report within three days, identifying persons who were principally involved in initiating, organising, coordinating or mobilising the campaign, livelaw.in reported.

Advocate VP Sharma, a member of the BCI Executive Committee, said the decision was taken with the approval of the committee and was necessary to ensure discipline among students.

He added that the enrolment process could proceed if the inquiry finds that there was no indiscipline.
