Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red warning for two districts of Odisha till around 9 pm on Friday.
Severe thunderstorms, lightning with surface wind of 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph and heavy to moderate rain may occur at isolated places in Cuttack and Nayagarh districts in next 3 hours. People have been advised to keep a watch on the weather and move to safer places to protect themselves from lightning strikes.
The Met office had earlier sounded a red warning for Bhadrak district till 7.33 pm. There was also an orange warning of severe thunderstorms, lightning and surface wind of 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph along with moderate to intense spells of rain for the districts of Cuttack and Khurda, including the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, till 7.37 pm.
The MeT office had earlier warned of intense thunderstorm activity with wind speed of 50-60 kmph in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur on June 5. Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (40-50 kmph) may also occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in the districts of Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh.
