Mumbai: A fresh controversy has emerged around Vijay’s much-anticipated film ‘Jana Nayagan’, with reports claiming that the actor-turned-CM has advised the makers to refund distributors amid ongoing hurdles with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
It has sparked widespread speculation about the film’s release plans and financial prospects.
While there has been no official confirmation from the makers, the reported move has raised questions about what lies ahead for what was Vijay’s final film before his full-fledged entry into politics.
“While we are still in talks, we have decided to refund the money to the film distributors. We felt it was unfair to keep them in the loop, while we are still waiting for a possible release date,” Mohan Suprith, business head of KVN Productions, was quoted as saying by SCREEN.
Sources claim that the move was initiated by Vijay, with the film allegedly facing prolonged delays and uncertainty.
The decision comes amid continued silence from both the CBFC and the makers, with no official update yet on the film’s certification or release timeline.
When ‘Jana Nayagan’s release was delayed at at the last minute and the film was referred to the CBFC’s revising committee, distributors allegedly had to return crores of rupees collected through advance bookings.
Earlier this year, the producers informed the Madras High Court that the film had stakes worth around Rs 500 crore riding on it.
Speaking about what happened to ‘Jana Nayagan’, director Vinoth remarked, “That is not up to me. I don’t even have the courage to tell you the truth. Even if I had the courage, you wouldn’t have the courage to share it.”
